Welcome new members!

How do I Join United Academics?
Joining United Academics AAUP/AFT has never been easier. You simply need to
go the dues deduction form (located below), and complete it. You may send it
to us by mail or fax. Mail it to PO Box 755895 Fairbanks Alaska, 99775-5895
or fax it to 907-474-2465.
Dues for full members are 1.25% of your gross salary, deducted on a bi-weekly basis from your University paycheck.
The Dues Deduction Form has two (2) options available:
One can select either Full Membership or Agency Fee.
The difference between these categories is based on the portion of the dues
money that is spent on political activities (primarily lobbying) by United Academics
and/or its national affiliates. Lobbying performed by the AAUP and AFT is aimed
at protecting and enhancing higher education and faculty rights, such as Academic
Freedom, and fighting organizations like those of David Horowitz’ that
seek to restrict those rights. AFT has a Political Action Committee (Committee
on Political Education or COPE) that has been especially active in the fight
against David Horowitz’ group Students for Academic Freedom and similar
organizations such as Campus Watch. United Academics has a Political Action
Committee as well, one funded by voluntary member allocation of 7% of their
dues to be used primarily to advance United Academics member interests before
the state legislature.
Joining as a full dues paying member gives you the ability to participate directly
in the union and help shape the organization through seeking elective union
office(s), voting in officer and ratification of contract elections, participating
on important committees (including the team that negotiates new Collective Bargaining
Agreements every three years) and having a voice in changes to the union Constitution.
Both Full Membership and Agency Fee status provides unit members with the full
protection of the Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiated between United
Academics and the University of Alaska. This includes, but is not limited to:
participation in salary increases and benefits resulting from negotiations;
advocacy and representation in grievances and/or complaints resulting from violations
by the University of procedures contained in the Collective Bargaining Agreement,
University policies, Board of Regents rules and regulations and/or state statutes;
protection of Academic Freedom; and representation in any cases where administrative
attempts to sanction faculty members are encountered.
