General Information

United Academics-AAUP/AFT Local 4996 is the largest higher education faculty union for the University of Alaska statewide system. Faculty members are active at all three campuses (Fairbanks, Anchorage, and Southeast) of the University of Alaska. We aim to bring public funding for education back up to a level that adequately serves the people of Alaska. By uniting faculty towards the common goal of providing quality education to the students in theUniversity of Alaska statewide system, while restoring meaningful faculty governance and maintaining adequate compensation of faculty members, United Academics-AAUP/AFT hopes to save higher education in Alaska.

We are affiliated with the American Association of University Professors and the American Federation of Teachers.

 

Background

United Academics AAUP/AFT was organized in 1996, ratifying our first contract in 1998. Since that time, positive changes in health care benefits, faculty workload and wages have been made through union representation and we have continued to maintain great health care benefits. HOW TO JOIN UNITED ACADEMICS AAUP/AFT LOCAL 4996

Newcomers to the University of Alaska Faculty, assigned by the employerin accordance with the Collective Bargaining agreement as BargainingUnit Members, join our union by filling out a Dues Deduction Form,which is available here on the University of Alaska Statewide website.

Mail or fax your dues deduction form to our office at (907) 474-2465. We will process it and provide the information for Human Resources to begin your automatic deductions.

Full membership in United Academics entitles you to all the benefits available to us through our affiliates, AAUP and AFT, plus voting privileges in our union elections.

All members, including those who choose to pay Agency Fees rather than become full members, are represented by United Academics in negotiations for the Collective Bargaining Agreement and other agreements between the Union and the University. In addition, should any member need advice regarding the grievance process, our office is ready to assist.

Objectives

Our organizational objectives, as stated in our Constitution, are as follows:

1. Facilitate more effective cooperation among faculty at the University of Alaska for the promotion of the interests of higher education, teaching, research, and service, and in general to increase the usefulness and advance the standards, ideals, and welfare of the profession.

2. Protect and advance the professional status and interests of all faculty.

3. Promote the diversity of unique academic interests and capabilities at each campus within a unified university.

4. Defend academic freedom at the University of Alaska.

5. Sustain and enhance governance at the University of Alaska.

6. Support and promote the purposes of the national constitutions of the AAUP and AFT as they relate to higher education.

7. Join AAUP in its commitment to use its procedures and to take measures,including censure, against colleges and universities practicing illegal or unconstitutional discrimination, or discrimination on a basis not demonstrably related to the job functioninvolved, including but not limited to age, sex, disability, race, religion, national origins, marital status, or sexual orientation.

8. Promote educational programs, opportunities, and research at the University of Alaska for the benefit of the people of the State of Alaska.
